Using Rollers

Hello, hello, hello!

My last post was about my flat, straight hair. Well I took your advice, and decided to use some rollers. It wasn't my best roller-setting job. I'm a little out of practice, but I didn't need it to be perfect:

My hair was a lot bigger, which was great. I used rollers every night since then rather than pin curl my hair.

Thanks for the advice ladies! This week will be all about braids! I'm going to incorporate braids into all of my styling for this week. It should be fun :-)

Art student falls into Picasso painting.

I was just taking a peak at the news and came across this article and well I just had to post about it.

So a woman who was taking an art class at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art accidentally fell into a Picasso painting "The Actor" worth $130 million and ripped it. (ahhhh the pain)

Gosh can you imagine if that happened to you, I would probably die on the spot.

The work from the Rose period was painted in the winter of 1904-1905. Thankfully the damage did not affect the "focal point of the composition" and should be repaired for an exhibition later this year, the museum said.

Unadulterated Praise!

"Because your lovingkindness is better than life, my lips will praise You. Thus I will bless You while I live. I will lifet up my hands in Your name."

- Psalms 63:3-4

I've had an amazing week, spiritually speaking. Everyday I've been blessed, and God has been speaking to me in a very special way. Last week I blogged about not feeling close to God, and God used that post to reawaken my spiritual life. It's been a WONDERFUL week, and I'm excited about getting to know Jesus better.

Here's an example of what my week's been like:

I sold one of my BlackBerrys on Ebay for $250. I sent it off to the address and the person paid right away. However I got an email from him this week saying that he hasn't received the phone and that his tracking number says it was mailed to the wrong address. Now on my receipt from the post office, it says it was sent to the correct address, so I'm not sure what the mixup was. Anyway, I was feeling really down a bout the whole thing because I wanted to give that money to my brother who's away at school.

Well I started praying that night and put my situation in God's hands. Sounds crazy, but while I was praying, I remembered that I had gotten a rebate check from Sprint (from another BlackBerry I'd bought...I love those phones =) I hadn't seen the check in a while, so I started looking around my room. But I kept hearing that I should check the trash. I ignored it, because there was no way I could have thrown something like that away. I kept looking in my room, but the feeling kept getting stronger that I should check the trash. So I went in the kitchen and checked the garbage, and sure enough...there was that rebate check, protected from the garbage by the envelope it came in.

Needless to say...I'm not really worried about my Ebay transaction. God is taking care of me, just like He always has.

I don't even have anything else to say! My heart is full =)

Haute Couture Spring 2010: Givenchy, Jean Paul Gaultier, Valentino

Haute Couture Spring 2010

"I was scared of couture at the beginning, and reacted by staying away from looking at the past at all," Riccardo Tisci confessed before the show. "But now I'm more confident, I started looking into the archive, and found the idea of this strong, erotic phase of Parisian women I related to."

Riccardo Tisci work for Givenchy its absolutely remarkable, with each collection his flawless trailering and attention to detail is only becoming more pronounce. Everyone wants to know what he's thinking.

I so love the glam-rock electric blue and green mosaic-embellished jumpsuit, its a risk taking piece that will certainly look amazing in editorial work.

Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture Spring 2010

Jean Paul Gaultier went down Mexico way. All the way. He had a mariachi band. He had gauchos, sombreros, striped peasant blankets, Spanish shawls, and cigars. He had a conquistador moment and then he was into the jungle, weaving leaves with indigenous peoples.

ahhh I love Gaultier's collection so fun and lively, with incredibly funky tribal details. Just makes me wanna party on a beach. Can he ever go wrong !?! it would seem not.

Influenced by an exhibition about Moctezuma, the Aztec emperor, in London last year and side influence of Avatar's tribal-eco message.

Valentino Haute Couture Spring 2010

Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli created a Garden of Eden in cyberworld for their third Valentino couture show with a stunning tribal concept moulded into a new and futuristic style of draping and body-con.

I'm a huge fan of Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Picciolis work for Valentino, they bring the fashion house a youthful and modern twist that is perfect in this time and age.

Each of their collections brings something new and exciting so I can't wait to see what they have some up with for the Valentino Fall 10 collection.

Haute Couture Spring 2010: Chanel

"an electronic flash in my head at five o'clock one morning Silver and pastel,"said Karl Largerfeld to "It's the first time in my whole career I've done a collection without black or navy. There's not one gold button."

From the heart-shaped cartoonish hair to the horizontal bands of mille-feuille chiffon frills, minutely frayed at the edges, his collection was a soft romantic paradise for any girl looking for her feminine side.

The collection personally reminded me of Wendy from the book, play and animated film Peter Pan. Im not sure if it was the long silk garments, that gave a sense of a 1950's night gown or just the mix of youthful fun with a sophisticated femininity of growing up.

Overall i really adore the whole collection, as always Largerfeld captured the classic Coco Chanel designs while creating something new and beautiful to see.

Coming March 28 - April 3: Secondhand Fashion Week

I don't know about you, but I think it's about time that we had a new online event up and running at AmandaBeth! I've held off on posting this for a while because I didn't know what my schedule was going to be for the next few months, but I think it's finally safe to announce... Secondhand Fashion Week!!!

What is this event all about?

The purpose behind this event is to celebrate frugal fashionistas and their awesome creativity. In the whole fashion world there is this mindset that in order to be really fashionable, we need to pick up high end pieces, brand new, and spend a fortune on our wardrobes so that we can somehow be accepted as a fashionista. I don't know about you, ladies, but I'm not buying into it. In fact, I can't afford to buy into it. I believe that God has commissioned us to be good stewards of what he has given us and breaking our budget (especially in shopping for something as frivolous as clothes ;) is not a good thing.

Over the years, I have collected a whole lot of clothes secondhand; either by shopping my favorite thrift stores or by receiving cast offs and hand-me-downs. Some people might have a problem with wearing an item that had formerly belonged to someone else, but I say that if it looks good on you, don't worry about who wore it beforehand. If you can take secondhand pieces and reinvent them to make them your own, you are a true fashionista. :)

How do I participate?

The format of this event will be very similar to Summer Fashion Week and Maid Marian's Wardrobe. From March 28 - April 3, the goal is to dig through our closets for the awesome secondhand pieces and wear a series of outfits throughout the week based around those items. (Of course, not everything you wear has to be secondhand  - for example, I have like all of one pair of used shoes :P -  but the main statement pieces in your ensemble, or what everything else is based around, should be something that was purchased or given secondhand.)

Take pictures of your outfits and post them to your blog each day of the event. (You can also shoot outfits in advance if that fits your schedule the best.) You may include other family members who are participating in the challenge. Be sure to include the brand names of what you are wearing and where/how you got the different pieces.

Each day of the week, there will be a post featuring what I am wearing and a box in which you can include the link of your secondhand fashion blog post for the day. (P.S. If you don't have a blog, it is super easy to set one up and post pictures using - give it a try! :) I will also set up a special album on where you can upload your pictures, if you'd rather not use your own blog.

As well as participating in the secondhand fashion photos challenge, I would love to see any other sorts of frugal fashion related blog posts. Especially awesome would be DIY (do it yourself) REfashioned projects, in which you take an item and remake or revamp it. I will have a separate box in which you can post any links that fit into this category.

Of course, I will also try to include some fun giveaways over the week long event. If anyone would like some publicity for their home business/Etsy shop or cetera by donating an item for the giveaway, please email me at amandabethboutique{at} - I'd love to work in publicizing your business through the event in exchange for an item!

Also, if any business/shop/site/et cetera is interested in becoming a paid sponsor for the event, they can contact me - amandabethboutique{at} . For a flat fee, your business/site banner can be displayed and promoted throughout the week as an official sponsor. Any way that I can give you some publicity, I'll try my best to do it! :)

Last thoughts...

Walking hand in hand with all of this is our desire to be modest as well as fashionable. I'm not going to  set a strict rule or standard for what you should or should not wear, but just keep modesty and class in mind throughout the event and we should turn out all right. :) Of course, I reserve the right to refuse any submissions to the event if I feel that they do not meet the standards of this site.

At the end of the week, I and a small panel of judges will select a number of finalists for the event, choosing those that we thought were the most creative and stylish secondhand fashionistas. Then, for one week, a poll will go up so that you all can vote for your favorite! If we receiving a fair amount of other frugal fashion or DIY related posts, we may also vote for a "best of" in that category.

If you plan on participating in the event, please consider saving one of the banners in this post to your computer and then uploading it to your blog with a link to . Thanks! I appreciate it. :)

Any thoughts, questions or concerns? Please leave a comment and I will try to address them! As always, there are usually some bugs to work out in the early stages, but I try and keep things as simple as possible. Should be fun! :)

Haute Couture Spring 2010: Armani Privé

"It's about the moon," explained Giorgio Armani before his show. "I always need a hook to get into a collection, and that was it thinking about something romantic and dreamy, far away
from our everyday life. Something less harsh." "is also a bit of a joke."

The collection is absolutly stunning with perfect renderings of sparkling silver beading, pale metallic pinks and greens, synthetic moiré treatments of organza, and paillettes shot with flashes of electric blue.

I especially love the shaping of the fabrics around the body, giving lengthening, figure-narrowing illusions and as always the flawless detailing.
